CHTE - Common Hair Transplant Examination

As stressed, correctly, in the National Medical Council (NMC) guidelines, any registered medical practitioner (MBBS & above) can perform hair transplants as long as they are :

1. Trained in modern hair transplant surgery, and,
2. Have knowledge of relevant dermatologic diseases, diagnosis and treatment modalities.
While hair transplant is taught by veteran experienced hair transplant doctors worldwide to young interested doctors; there is little, if any, training offered formally in medical or dental colleges about modern, cutting edge hair transplant surgery.

As a result, doctors and patients alike have no way of judging the capability of practising doctor as there is currently no standardised, qualifying test.

Moreover, it will be against national interests to limit hair transplant surgeons to only a few select specialities (who themselves are NOT taught advanced hair transplant surgeons in medical colleges).
World over, doctors from all specialities (including MBBS) are permitted to perform hair transplant surgeries.
Trying to limit hair transplant practice in this manner only in India, will be unpatriotic as well as damaging to the interests of India and the Indian population. People will be either forced to go to few (maybe expensive) doctors in India or to travel to get the same Hair Transplant surgery performed by MBBS or above doctors in UK, Australia, and Turkey etc.

Requirements for CHTE –
Any practising hair transplant doctors and maxillofacial surgeons are eligible.

Besides your ID, qualification and registration proof, the test itself will comprise of –
1 Written test (MCQ+essay type questions)
2. Viva by experienced HT surgeons.
3. Patient log with picture details (the examiners will need to see preoperative hairline/crown area markings + donor area after extraction to see that grafts are taken from the safe donor area only + after graft placement pictures+ result pictures).
A minimum of 10 unique patient detailed records will be required.

Last date of submitting qualification details and examination fee is 5 August 2023.

This will be a grave financial loss as well as loss of prestige for India.

This initiative is, thus, taken by SHTS under guidance and with help of veteran, experienced hair transplant doctors of India & abroad.

Practising hair transplant surgeons will now be eligible to appear for qualifying examination by experienced doctors and inventors of the field where their knowledge and surgical acumen will be assessed.

This examination will help standardise the care, knowledge & training required to perform hair transplants safely and correctly without harm to the patients.

By this Certificate(given on successful completion of the exam), prospective patients will also have a way of determining whether their doctor is adequately trained and qualified for performing modern, cutting edge hair transplant.
Since the Dental Council of India has stated Maxillofacial surgeons being eligible to perform hair transplant, they are similarly eligible to appear for CHTE.

The CHTE consist of
1. Written test
2. Viva voce
3. Submission of patients pictures & log book (intra operative & post-operative)

The same will be evaluated by distinguished, veteran doctors of hair transplant field.
